Detroit's
Black Artist Markets Are The Picture Of Success
This article gives a brief history and overview of the African American artist
organizations in Metropolitan Detroit---how these organizations, galleries,
and artists work together to maintain community. Detroit News Art Critic
Joy Hakanson Colby's article compares the African-American art scene in Detroit
to Motown in the 60's. She describes the scene, discusses the artists, and
lists the Metropolitan Detroit galleries that are owned and operated by African
Americans and feature works by black artists.

Puryear, Emma Amos, Lois Mailou Jones,
Richard Mayhew , Sam Gilliam,
and James VanDerZee. Needless to say I am very thrilled and honored to be
included in this group! The extensive web site describes the complete
exhibition---history, venues, and also gives insight into both the curatorial
work and art of Professor David C. Driskell. Please visit this site and explore
the wonderful art! There is a catalog available that I am sure will become
a valued addition to any library focusing on African American art!

SIGNATURE IMAGES , a two-person exhibition at the Detroit Institute

by the DIA in 1990. This assemblage is a part of a series of allegorical
portrait constructions, and was a tribute to my parents, Dr. John T. Snowden
and Clara P. Snowden, both of whom passed away in 1987. Symbols in the piece

Highland Park
Storm
This is Stephen Goodfellow's personal report on the devastation caused
by the recent Tornado touchdown in southeastern lower Michigan.
This was the first time in my memory that a funnel cloud entered the city
of Detroit. It was for me, the embodiment of all my nightmares about tornadoes;
what was metaphor to be examined in art had suddenly become too real, as
I saw and heard the winds first-hand, and then the anguish of my neighbors,
some of whom lost everything.
Tornado! July 2, 1997 -- Highland
Park, Michigan
